The Weems & Plath Porthole Desk Clock frames a quartz alarm clock in a polished brass porthole, set into an arched block of solid hardwood with a mahogany finish. It is a small, handsome piece of nautical design for a desk, a bedside table or a bookshelf, and a present that earns its keep.
A porthole for the study
Everything about the case recalls a ship's porthole: a hinge at the top, two dogs at the sides and a ring of bolt heads around the rim. The brass carries a maintenance-free finish, so it keeps its shine without polish, and the block looks as good from the side and back as it does from the front.
The white 67 mm dial has black Arabic numerals with a small 24-hour ring, and a yellow hand marks the alarm time. The video button below the photos opens a clip of the clock in action, sound included.
Gifting and décor
For a retirement, a new command, a sailing club prize or a friend who has just moved to the coast, it strikes the right note without being showy. It suits a traditional study with leather and dark wood as readily as a light, modern interior with a coastal touch. A scratch-resistant sole finishes the base, and the AA battery is included, so it is ready to set up straight from the box.

Frequently asked questions
Will the brass tarnish?
No. The finish is maintenance-free, and for the Porthole Collection Weems & Plath explicitly includes the finish in its warranty. Wipe away fingerprints promptly and dust with a soft cloth to keep the surface flawless.
How is the time set?
With the setting knob behind the movement: an anticlockwise turn advances the hands and a clockwise turn takes them back. Do not push the hands round with a finger.
How often should the battery be changed?
Weems & Plath recommends fitting a new battery once a year, even if the old one is still working, and removing it if the clock is put away for a long time, because the warranty does not cover damage caused by battery leakage.
